Have I told this story...recently? I told it to the Auto-Zone parts store manager yesterday. He was amused. It goes like this: Riding with the Iron Butt Association run from Key West to Prudhoe Bay Alaska, I stopped at the Calgary BMW motorcycle service center for a walk-in oil and filter change. I think that the service manager wanted to honor my request for walk-in service, but refused without my having an appointment. I'm sure he realized that just because the service was suggested at 3000 miles, it wasn't an emergency and my road trip was not in jeopardy. But I insisted, resorting at length to the Stanley Cup appeal. 1 week earlier of course, the Tampa Bay Lightning had defeated the Calgary Flame in the last game of the 2004 season, winning the Stanley Cup. But my appeal fell on deaf ears. I was assured that I was not being denied service because I was from Tampa. I made a strong case though. So, as I told this story to the Auto-Zone parts guy yesterday, I thanked him excessively for his help and advice on servicing the cooling system and the charging system in my old bus...affectionately, the MoHo. (Short for Motorhome.) I created a jumper to charge the coach battery while driving, and then disconnect at at a campsite. Things are good there. The cooling system got fresh coolant, hopefully appeasing then water pump spirits. Unknown to me was the fact that coolant acts as a lubricant, far improving the functionality of plain water. What did I know? I work on air-cooled European twins...I blather.
I got a call from a ranger at a Georgia State Park way up in the Nantahala Forest. The deal includes free RV hook-up for 25 hours of Camp Host duties per week. She described 3 bear sitings last week, (I didn't ask about Goldilocks), 3600 feet of elevation, and cool nights. After the required background check and final approval, I'll head out there. I'm really stoked. Today I stop in Adel for a park visit, and continue up 441 toward Macon area. Happy Trails!
