Did we already talk about the petroglyphs and pictographs among the boulders at City of Rocks State Park? There are a half-dozen scattered among the rocks. They are tough to find without the list of hints not often supplied by park custodians, but I did venture to find this one. Do you know the difference between a pictograph and a petroglyph? A pictograph is written on the stone with an ink or stain, and a petroglyph is etched or carved or scraped into the stone. The ages of these designs vary from 200 to 500 years, I understand and are at numerous locations throughout the Southwest U.S. They may be simple artistic expressions of the maker, or they may depict an event or record history of various kinds. A hunt, or a battle for instance. Something about being near one triggers a connection to that distant past where hunter-gatherer tribes thought many of the same thoughts as we do today, but operated with a fraction of the knowledge we posses today. Always intriguing for me.
