My little 25 foot Dodge Champion is gracefully negotiating the hills of North Georgia. I've arrived Baldwin and have chugged up a few long grades with no consequences. I've been checking oil levels and transmission fluid levels since I left Tampa. Things have stabilized. There was a leak that has abated after some miles. Usually gaskets swell back up after some heating and cooling and then tend to stop leaking. I put a little more tension on the transmission drain pan nuts before I left town. The combination seems to be working. I'm told that this old Dodge 727 tranny was the one to have, back in the day.
Last night I stayed at another Walmart. There's no question that despite some aversion to the Walmart business plan, I've been sucked into the convenience of having a Superstore in my back yard. Quite a marketing coup. I seem to be finding the wifi stations fairly well also. There is a strong tourist economy here, and the McDonalds' and Starbucks' seem to show up each morning for my daily blog post. I would like to start including some photos, and will coordinate the hardware onboard to make that happen. Unfortunately, the scenery is still up the road a piece.
There's one experience I had at a Starbucks yesterday that is at least worth a note. A somewhat frantic, wildly gray-haired gentleman approached me and a woman sitting nearby and asked if either of us were from the area. Neither of us were and he started in with complaints about not being able to get on the highway for all of the sheriff's cars. I offered that I was online with Google Maps, and could probably help him reroute, but he held up his smartphone and started in about it's lack of service. He didn't seem reachable, given his agitation, I didn't offer any more help, and eventually he left. But isn't it funny that I could offer him a look at a map and not even be knowlegable of the area? Tech is a funny thing. The fact that he couldn't see the solution leads me to the problem I've had with tech saturation. Couldn't we all just let go a little more? Is it all worth it? I'd like to keep my options open with respect to whether to tech or not to tech. That's part of my roadtrip mission.
Ok, while I'm Just Blathering On, I'll mention that at times the roadtrip means eating from a store of dry goods on board, or from a cooler. (Once I'm stopped I can either plug into the generator or the shore power at the campsite and operate the fridge.) So eating all these fruits and nuts and grains is agreeing with me a great deal. I'm feeling a bit healthier than at home. Steering clear of the fast foods, though frequently using the wifi at those purveyors, is getting to be the norm again. Another mission of the roadtrip.
I should be parked somewhere near the campground in an hour. I'll unload the Goose and ride her up the mountain. Learning about not getting an RV into a place that you can't get out of only comes with experience, sometimes the experience of others. I saw a fellow get his 45 footer down a back road that he couldn't get out of. He had to unhitch his tow vehicle to give him more maneuverability and then back out. My taking the Guzzi up the hill will hopefully keep me from sticking my nose someplace it doesn't belong. More again later.
