Santa Fe National Forest - El Provenir Campground

10/16/14
Four nights and four days in the city is enough. There is a National Forest campground I've moved over to. It's a 10 miles further out from Las Vegas, and it's in the woods. It is REALLY in the woods. It's only $8 per night. There's a fresh water pump, pit toilets, and nice grills and fire rings. The site I found was level and I was the only one here until an hour ago. Total wilderness, and no street noise at all. I built a great little campfire, something I hadn't bothered with at Storrie Lake, and I just soaked in all of the wilderness energy. Windy had complete run of the area and seemed very happy in my lap by the fire. He was losing weight and looking pretty scrappy when we pulled out of the city, but his spirits have lifted now that he has his freedom. I found some new food at the Tractor Supply Co. that he seems to have taken to. He's also taking some over-the-counter medicine for what must be the recurring uninary tract infection. Poor guy. He may be going back to the vet before long.
The plan is still the same. I think we will camp here 2 nights, then move on to Matanzas S.P. south east of Albq. I can run into town to meet up with David and Susan and then Windy and I are off to Silver City. I keep hearing great things about City of Rocks S.P., so it may not be as desolate as I had been thinking. Just being in the high desert down there is fun. I wonder if the place will be littered with tarantulas? Or was that just in south Texas? More to follow.
