Storrie Lake State Park - Las Vegas, NM

10/12/14
Got to Storrie Lake S.P. today. I'm glad we got out of the mountains. I'm sure they will have snow along with this cold front tonight. The ranger here at Storrie Lake expects snow here tonight. Sorry, but that's not in the plan! I'm trying to stay south of the snow, and though I got some driving the other day, I hope to be done. I've got the generator running and the heat going without much fear about burning gasoline. If I have to run a little more into the tank, so be it. The alternative is to pay an extra $4 per night for electric. Hmmm, might be worth it.
Windy has been pretty sick again. Or just upset about travelling. I've got to figure out how to make his cat box a bit more attractive to him. Fresh paint? He has to stop using my bed. He blessed my down bag last night. I suppose a laundry run was in order anyway.
Storrie Lake was a windy place when I got here. I made the short hop to Walmart on the Guzzi and coming back I hit some gusts over 50mph easily. The RV awning was flopping madly. I feared a trash can might come following across the park. I saw a decent sunset. It's different with sunsets away from the mountains. In a canyon, the daylight ends an hour earlier and there is no distant view of the horizon as the sun sneaks behind the hills. Here at Storrie Lake, the hills are far off and the sun set slowly. My shadow, as I walked along the rocky shore, stretched first twentyfeet, then forty, and then eighty feet across the beach as the sun finally dropped behind the mountains. The clouds first lit a shadowy white, and shortly turned to orange and a dark pink. It's a harbinger of the sunsets south of here. I'm sure that the desert sunsets at City of Rocks will be brilliant. One day...I'll sort out the posting of pictures to the blog. Hang in there, I'm getting there.
